There will be days when we don’t feel too good about ourselves or we’re just beyond burnt out from our life commitments. Our feelings are all over the place, our mind is cloudy and we’re mentally tired. Although we feel like we need to keep powering on, what we actually need to do is to do a little bit of a mind cleanse. If you’re wondering how you can rejuvenate your mind then this article is definitely for you!
It is empowering to be able to refresh your mind. We eat healthy to replenish our body, we sleep to recharge our energy… but we often neglect to look after our brains. Mental health is an important aspect of a holistic approach to our overall wellbeing.
Taking action for a mind reset means we’re self-aware enough to realise that we need a break. Sometimes it’s even more important to know that things aren’t working out the way they should and so maybe we need to take a step back, reset and recharge. Rejuvenating your mind just means you’re taking a breather to gain more clarity and motivation. It increases our productivity and prevents burn out.
Below are 10 ways on how you can rejuvenate your mind and come back fresher than ever.
How to Rejuvenate Your Mind
1. Take a Shower or a Bath
There is no better way to refresh ourselves with a shower or bath. The pleasant feeling of water running down our skin, washing away any thoughts or emotions that might be plaguing us. It’s weird though, we only appreciate it once we’re in there but we forget how amazing it is when we most need it. So every time you need to reset your mind and need a little pick-me-up, head straight to the shower!
2. Go for a Long Walk
Cleanse your mind with a walk. Long walks, especially when we’re immersed in nature, does wonders for our mind and not to mention, our body. It’s a great starting point and way to recharge. We can listen to the nature’s sounds or plug in some earphones and get lost in the music. I like to start off with mindful walking and then I play my favourite music or podcasts (it helps if they’re the motivational type too!).
Recharge your mind with a run. There is nothing quite like the runner’s high after a good run and it’s amazing to use it as a marker of our new leaf. Running clears the mind, opens up our breathing and works our body. Sometimes the pain and discomfort we experience during running is quite inspiring as it signifies a challenge, one which we can easily hurdle over. Afterwards, we feel healthy and light. It’s a good-tired feeling and one which is great to start off with.
4. Catch Up with a Friend
I love catching up with my best friend whenever I decide to clear my mind. Interestingly, our conversations steer towards the deeper topics of life, mindfulness, goals and ambitions. But it doesn’t have to be about serious things, sometimes we just need good company and laughter to give our minds a little bit of a reboot.
5. Go for a Drive
We usually associate our cars and driving with commuting to work/study or to do errands. But driving can be quite liberating. Go for a drive to the beach or up in the hills and relish in the scenery and feel the wind blowing against your hair. Better yet, take a friend or family member with you and grab food on the way. Sometimes the best way is just to drive without a clear destination.
Cleaning can send a subtle yet powerful message to ourselves that we’re ready to move on. When I’m turning over a new leaf for something work or side project-related, I clean my desk and study room. If it’s something in my personal life, I like to clean out my bedroom. There’s something about clearing the mess that we made previously and starting afresh with a clean environment that is so fitting.
7. Look Your Best
Out of the many ways to renew your mind, this would have to be my favourite. Wear your favourite clothes and jewellery and do your hair and make-up as if you were going out to a nice lunch. The process of doing all this is in itself powerful. It takes our minds off things but also, when we like the way we look and feel comfortable and confident, our thoughts and actions manifest those feelings to the world.
Meditation and the practice of mindfulness is incredibly powerful to rejuvenate your mind and body. I refresh my mind by starting my mornings a with mindfulness session and cleanse my mind with another at night. You can use mindfulness guides which may have specific sessions on starting afresh. Because we’re trying to reset, it’s important to not let the past or the future hold us back. So learning how to be in the present is very useful.
9. Listen to Empowering Songs or Speeches
I wasn’t always a music person but I’ve recently discovered how music can help soothe our minds. Start the mind rejuvenation by listening to your favourite songs or ones that have meaningful lyrics. Motivational speeches and podcasts are great if you prefer something more direct. It can validate our need for a restart and helps create a positive mindset.
Take a moment to thank yourself, your mind and body for giving you the ability to do whatever it is that you want to do. Also be grateful of your ability to recognise that you can give your mind some TLC and that you can rejuvenate your mind to prevent poor mental health and burnout. Gratitude keeps us down to earth and reminds us that there are good things for us out there even when we feel like there isn’t.
